A full examination, a scale and polish, and a plan for anything that needs doing. Most people come twice a year.

The dentist looks at every tooth, the gums around them, and the soft tissue of the mouth and tongue. Radiographs are taken only when there is a reason to take them — usually every two or three years, and less often for children.
The hygienist then removes the hard deposit that a toothbrush cannot, which is what causes gum disease, and shows you where you are missing. Almost everybody misses the same two places.
Allow forty minutes for the two together. You will leave knowing whether anything needs doing, what it would cost, and what happens if you leave it — which is a real option and is sometimes the right one.
